Parco Naturale Monti Simbruini
The Reserve is part of the Appenine range. It covers
30,000
hectares and includes seven localities,
from Trevi and Filettino along the higher reaches of the River Aniene, and
includes Vallepietra, Jenne, Subiaco and also Cervara di Roma and Camerata
Nuova towards the Abruzzo. The whole area is very thinly populated. The
Simbruini Mountains are a redoubtable limestone chain between Lazio and
the Abruzzo, rising to the peaks of Mt Autore (1853 m),
Mt Tarino (1961 m), Mt Cotento (2014 m) and
Mt Viglio (2156 m).
The
Park features many interesting geological aspects, including gorges and
caves. These include the
“Ice Well” at Camposecco in Camerata Nuova,
and the caves of
Inferniglio,
near Jenne,
Simbrivio,
at Vallepietra, and Pertuso, near Filettino.
At a height of 1200 to 1800
metres,
there are splendid forests of beech,
mountain ash, yew and maple.
Lower down, there are woods of oak,
flowering ash, and hazel.
In early summer there are magnificent
displays of violets, narcissus and
many kinds of wild orchid.
Among the mammals are the wolf, the bear, the mountain goat, fox, wildcat,
badger, porcupine, marten, squirrel, weasel, and boar. Birds include the
eagle, peregrine falcon, buzzard, sparrowhawk, tawny and eagle owl, and
partridge. In the rivers, there are brown trout, barbel and crayfish.
