Monastero di San Benedetto
Petrarch
called this place the “Threshold of Paradise” and even today the visitor is
moved by the sight of this “nest of swallows".
The
Sanctuary is made up of two churches built one above the other, and of
various chapels, most with irregularly-shaped walls. There are also stairs
and ramps, which cling to the cliffs of natural rock. In the Upper Church,
visitors may note the XIV century frescoes of the Sienese School, the fine
floor and the pulpit; in the Lower Church, there are XIII century frescoes
by Conxolus and the Sacred Cave (with the statue of S. Benedict by Raggi, a
follower of Bernini). There is also the famous fresco of St. Francis
(without halo, therefore painted during the Saint's lifetime), the Chapel of
Our lady with frescoes of the Sienese School, and the Shepherds’ Cave, where
St. Benedict taught Christian doctrine. Nearby, there are traces of an VIII
century Madonna and Child, the oldest painting in the monastery.
