Convento
di San Francesco
The
convent and church rise on land given by the Abbot of Santa Scolastica Lando
to the St Francis of Assisi, when he went to Subiaco to visit the Sacred
Speco.
The church
has a single nave in the Franciscan style. The centre is dominated by the
tríptych of Antoniazzo Romano, dating from October 1467, and representing
the Virgin and Child, St Francis and St Anthony of Padua. Behind the
triptych there is are valuable choir furnishings, carved in walnut in 1504
by a Franciscan from Rieti.
The last chapel on the left has lovely frescoes by Sodoma, and a splendid
Nativity by Pinturicchio. On the opposite side of the church, the third
altar has a painting of St Francis receiving the stigmata, attributed to
Sebastiano of the Piombo (1485-1547).
