Subiaco
Subiaco is a
township of 8.931 inhabitants within the province of Rome, at an altitude of
408 m in the upper Aniene valley, on the river’s right bank.
The picturesque medieval village, stands on a rocky crag at the point where
the river emerges from the wild limestone gorge which is the site of the
Benedictine monasteries of Sacro Speco and of St. Scolastica Saint. It is a
centre of the highest religious and artistic interest.

Besides the
famous Benedictine Monasteries, the town offers other remarkable places of
interest. Among these are the Rocca (Palace) of the Borgia family,
constructed around 1077 by Abbot Giovanni V, who created a magnificent
feudal castle. This was substantially restored in 1476 by the Spanish
cardinal Rodrigo Borgia who fortified it militarily and lived in it with his
family.
Both Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia were born here. The Cathedral of S. Andrea
was rebuilt in its present imposing form by order of Pope Pius VI.. The
interior is in the form of a Latin cross measuring 64x22x20 metres, and
includes a paining of Christ from the workshop of Raphael, as well as works
by Nocchi and Cavakkucci.
To the right of the main altar there is an image of Our Lady by Sebastiano
Conca, that is believed to have miraculously moved its eyes on four
occasions. |
